PEOPLE

JOHANNA YLIPULLI

I’m Academy of Finland research fellow and docent in digital culture, especially anthropology of technology. The roots of my research and teaching work lie in humanities and social sciences as I’m trained as cultural anthropologist. Since 2010, I have worked in highly interdisciplinary environments and extended my expertise towards design and human-computer interaction (HCI), becoming a disciplinary hybrid and a specialist in design anthropology and humanistic HCI.

Currently I lead research projects at the Department of Computer Science, teach in interdisciplinary Information Networks program (INF), and supervise and advise students of INF and computer science.

mINNA VIGREN

I’m an Academy Postdoctoral Researcher. My ongoing project Imagining Sustainable Digital Futures: Outlines for Eco-Digital Citizenship focuses on developing methods for imagining a more socially and ecologically sustainable digital future. Key themes in my research are agency, power, imagination and imaginaries, alternative futures, and critical technology education in the context of a pervasively networked society and everyday life. In my interdisciplinary research, I combine critical internet studies, software and algorithm studies, science and technology studies, human-computer interaction, radical pedagogics, and futures studies.

RISTO SARVAS

I’m working as the head of degree programmes of Information Networks. The bachelor’s and master’s programs educate societally and ethically conscious engineers who shape the information societies we live in. Before heading these programs I spent almost a decade at the European software consultancy Futurice where I was the head of design and creator of the Lean Service Creation open source design toolkit. Before this expedition to the commercial world I did my doctorate on consumer photography and during my postdoc years I was the leader of a multi-disciplinary research group on social digital media.

I have co-authored the book “From Snapshots to Social Media” (Springer 2010) and co-curated the #Snapshot exhibition with the Finnish Museum of Photography in 2014.
